With mountain boots and portal axles
Porsche has put on the mountain boots and has climbed the highest volcano in the world with two thoroughly modified 911s. The Ojos del Salado in Chile was the volcanic stage on which the two converted 911s could show their tricks.
Will you be able to knock on Porsche’s door for a modern interpretation of the 911 Safari? It really does seem like that. Before you find a 911 with greater ground clearance at the Porsche Centers, however, Porsche shows two very different adventurous 911s. The brand has driven two thoroughly converted 911s, namely the highest volcano in Chile. But is a 911 suitable for that?
Obviously not a standard copy, but the two Porsche 911s that reached a height of more than 6 kilometers were therefore far from standard. The Germans grabbed two 911 Carrera 4S for the adventure. The 450 hp and 530 Nm strong six-cylinder boxer engine was not tampered with and the seven-speed automatic transmission remained itself, although the gearbox ratios have been adjusted. In addition, Porsche, together with Romain Dumas Motorsport, tinkered with a set of portal axles that increased the ground clearance to 35 centimeters. Fierce off-road tires filled the wheel arches, the bottom got carbon fiber skid plates and the front and rear axles were connected by what Porsche calls the Warp Connecter. Manual differentials, a winch, a modified cooling system and a set of spare tires made the 911s all set for the big adventure.
The two 911s reached a height of 6,007 meters and had to endure not only rough surfaces, but also low temperatures of as low as -30 degrees Celsius. A playful action to attract attention? Undoubtedly, but possibly the action is related to the raised 911 that Porsche will probably add to its range in the not too distant future. It also resulted in beautiful pictures!
