From 1 January 2023 there will be a price ceiling for energy. Read here what you should be able to use per day in January in terms of gas and electricity according to the standards of the price ceiling. In addition, we show what you can use in all other months of 2023 to stay below the price cap based on the consumption limits that have been set.
As everyone will know, there will be a price ceiling for energy for households from 1 January 2023. This means that each household pays a maximum of 1.45 euros per cubic meter of gas and 0.40 euros per kWh of electricity up to an annual consumption of 1,200 cubic meters of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity. If you use more electricity and gas than these quantities, the price of your energy supplier applies.
Daily energy consumption in January according to price ceiling standards
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced what quantities you are allowed to use in gas and electricity to stay within the norms of the price ceiling. The table below shows that on January 1, you were allowed to use a maximum of 7.2 cubic meters of gas and 11.3 kWh of electricity, and before January 2, that was 7.3 cubic meters of gas and 11.2 kWh of electricity. Fortunately, thanks to the mild weather, I stayed well below that.

Annual statement
Very important here is when your annual statement starts and that is different for everyone, because that is basically the date that you became a customer of that energy supplier. For your energy consumption and the price ceiling, the calendar year 2023 is not taken into account, with the balance being drawn up at the end of 2023. The government has established a standardized daily consumption for every day of the year, so it is not the case that you are allowed to use 100 cubic meters of gas every month, for example. Subsequently, the sum of all standard days up to the date of the annual statement is looked at and then your energy supplier compares this with your actual consumption. If you consume more than the standardized consumption for all those days up to the date of your annual bill, you pay the price of your energy supplier for that extra consumption. For the period after your annual statement until the end of 2023, a standard residual budget applies for energy consumption that is compared with your actual consumption. In any case, it is useful to know when your annual statement will be due.
Monthly energy consumption in 2023 according to price ceiling standards
In addition to the daily consumption, the Ministry of Economic Affairs has also announced the monthly consumption for 2023 according to the standards of the price cap. For example, you can see below that in January 2023 the consumption should be a maximum of 221 cubic meters of gas and 339 kWh of electricity. That 221 cubic meters of gas is also the most cubic meters of gas, because January is the month in which the most gas is consumed.
If your annual statement is drawn up on 1 February 2023, the price ceiling will therefore apply to whether you have used more or less than 221 cubic meters of gas and 339 kWh of electricity. If you are below that, you have to pay a maximum of the prices of the price ceiling, or 1.45 euros per cubic meter and/or 0.40 euros per kWh. Above that you pay the prices of your energy supplier.
