Minimalist fencing party
The wait is still on a brand new production car from Chrysler, but it won’t come before the American brand looks ahead to its future. With the Chrysler Synthesis Cockpit, it shows how the interior of future models can become.
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas is just around the corner and that is traditionally a trade show where car manufacturers showcase their most hi-tech show side. Last year, Chrysler took advantage of CES to show the first concrete concept car in years; the Airflow. This year it takes part of an interior. A creation Chrysler calls Synthesis Cockpit Demonstrator. As the name somewhat indicates, it is mainly an object that demonstrates only part of future models, namely the cockpit.
We see two modernly designed seats, but the dashboard is of course more eye-catching. In the spirit of the present time, this is a minimalist whole in which all operation and information is provided via screens. In the case of the Chrysler Synthesis Cockpit, there are three screens, of which the instrumentation and the central screen visually merge into one panel, while the third screen in front of the passenger’s nose is incorporated lower in the dashboard. Slightly different from, for example, Mercedes’ Hyperscreen, where the three screens are combined in one element. The design of the dashboard is also inspired by that of the Chrysler Airflow.
The Chrysler Synthesis Cockpit shows more than just some modern lines and new screens. According to Chrysler, it is a first sign of Stellantis’ dashboards of the future. In that sense, it may also be relevant for brands such as Peugeot, Opel and Fiat. Chrysler mentions STLA Brain, STLA Smart Cockpit and STLA AutoDrive technology. In short, the first is the centrally controlled digital architecture, the second comprises infotainment and the control of all associated functions, and the third is about autonomous driving. Artificial intelligence for adapting the functions to user needs, but also OTA updates are all part of this. Chrysler says STLA AutoDrive should enable Level 3 autonomous driving. Then in some cases you can keep your hands off the steering wheel and you no longer have to keep an eye on the road. To reinforce the latter, Chrysler has even omitted the steering wheel altogether in the Synthesis Cockpit.
When are we going to see something along these lines in practice? Well, Chrysler will be launching its first brand new all-electric model in 2025 and will have an all-new and all-electric model range in 2028. It is the first Stellantis brand to be allowed to work with the said technology in North America. It remains to be seen whether a Stellantis brand will be there before in Europe. As premium brands, DS, Alfa Romeo and Lancia seem to have the best papers in that regard.
