Heated belts provide EV with a considerably larger range

In the hunt for the largest possible range, the German ZF has come up with an interesting novelty. It introduces heated belts that can significantly increase the range of an electric car. What’s up with that?

A large battery pack, efficient electric motors, together with a low weight and slippery aerodynamics are components with which car manufacturers try to maximize the range of their electric cars. Supplier ZF thinks along – smart as it is – and comes up with an interesting solution for a larger range: the Heat Belt. That’s right, electrically heated seat belts.

ZF has developed heated belts that should help to further reduce energy consumption in electric cars. As a driver of an electric car, you can use the heated seat belts directly to warm yourself up without having to use the more energy-consuming climate control system. According to ZF – by also using the heated seats – this can increase the range of an electric car by up to 15 percent, depending on the model and the temperature. The belts are just as safe as regular seat belts, emphasizes ZF. The company does not report whether there are manufacturers who already want to install the belts.
