The Tonale is the first all-new Alfa in more than five years. Expectations are high. Is Alfa’s new SUV turning the segment upside down?
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the first all-new Alfa in more than five years. Expectations are high for the SUV that operates in the segment dominated by the Volvo XC40. The Giulietta successor can show it against that popular V40 replacement.
Why a Volvo XC40 as a competitor for the Alfa Romeo Tonale?
The Alfa Romeo Tonale must be able to compete with the premium brands in the popular SUV C segment. At least that’s what Alfa Romeo wants. Therefore, the main competitors for the Tonale are the BMW X1 (completely new, but not available at the time of this test), the Audi Q3, the Mercedes GLA class, but of course also the Volvo XC40. The latter has been on the market since 2018, but it remains as popular as ever. More than 30,000 have already been sold in the Netherlands. We opted for a B2, the mild hybrid powertrain presented in 2021, which replaced the T3 from then on.
What does the Alfa Romeo Tonale cost in this test?
The Tonale 1.5T Hybrid 160 Veloce is available from €52,500. Various options and packages raise that amount to more than €57,000. Among other things, the 20-inch wheels ensure this. Remarkable: there is no blind spot warning system on this version.
The Volvo XC40 B3 is an R-Design with a Luxury package. The R-Design started at €50,480, but the version we drove has a value of €54,106 according to the AutoWeek license plate check. Would you order the updated version with the same equipment and specifications, then you should go for a Volvo XC40 B3 mild-hybrid Plus with Dark theme (the R-Design as an equipment variant no longer exists) and then the amount is €56,623. The paint and the other upholstery provide an amount of €60,708 on the quotation.
