Mazda CX-90

Meet the Mazda CX-90. The Mazda CX-90 is an SUV with up to eight seats, so you can see it as the big brother of the Mazda CX-60. But the Mazda CX-60 and CX-90 will not be placed next to each other in the showroom. What’s up with that?

You do good business with SUVs and crossovers and Mazda is certainly not afraid to deliver quite a few overlapping models to the world of the high-legged. In the international delivery range of the brand we find the very similar CX-8 and CX-9 and in the United States the CX-5 and the here unknown CX-50 are brotherly side by side in the showrooms. The Mazda CX-60 sounded the starting signal for the arrival of a new series of relatively high-positioned Mazda models that are based on a basic rear-wheel drive platform. The Mazda CX-60 is not coming to the US market and will have a big brother with seven seats in the form of the yet to be revealed CX-80 in Europe. In the United States, Mazda will eventually add the CX-70 to its delivery range, which is also yet to be presented. That CX-60 equivalent also gets a big brother with three rows of seats and up to eight seats above it and it is already here: the Mazda CX-90.

Mazda CX-90

Especially from this angle, the differences with the CX-60 are clear.

The Mazda CX-90 shares its platform and technology with ‘our CX-60’ and it is therefore not surprising that any external similarities with that car are certainly not strange to the CX-90. From the front it looks like two drops of water, but at the rear there are indeed differences. The roofline of the longer Mazda CX-90 extends further back and the addition of a larger third side window means that the SUV’s windows are also different. The D-pillar of the CX-90 is optically a lot flatter. It should come as no surprise that the rear is also very similar to that of the CX-60 and that the entire dashboard has even been transferred almost one to one from the CX-60. Unfortunately, we cannot yet tell you how much larger the Mazda CX-90 is than the CX-60. Mazda does not yet release dimensions.

Mazda CX-90

You know the interior of the Mazda CX-90 from – you guessed it – the CX-60.

Like the Mazda CX-60 and the yet-to-be-revealed CX-70 (US) and CX-80 (Europe), the CX-90 sits on Mazda’s new core rear-wheel drive platform. In the United States, the Mazda CX-90 is available just like our CX-60 with a 327 hp and 500 Nm strong plug-in hybrid powertrain with, just like the CX-80, a 17.8 kWh battery. In addition, Mazda supplies the CX-90 with a 345 hp and also 500 Nm strong mild-hybrid 3.3 six-in-line petrol engine. The plug-in hybrid CX-60 won the title of ‘Mazda’s most powerful passenger car ever’ at its introduction, but now has to give it up to the six-cylinder CX-90. In fact, the blown 3.3 is the most powerful petrol engine Mazda has ever built.

For the European market, Mazda has announced, among other things, the arrival of a mild hybrid 3.0 e-Skyactiv-X engine. Indeed, the innovative Skyactiv X and not Skyactiv-G. In Australia, among others, the CX-60 already exists with a 3.3 six-in-line Skyactiv-G machine, but it is not as powerful as the version in the American CX-90. Mazda is also bringing new 3.3 six-in-line diesel engines to the CX-60 in Europe. We expect the European equivalent of the Mazda CX-90 – the CX-80 – later this year.
