Activists threaten action against expansion of German Tesla factory

Tesla currently wants little more than to expand its factory in Grünheide, Germany. Previously, local residents indicated in a reference that they were not keen on this and now it is activist groups that are joining the battle. They threaten protests.

Tesla’s site in Grüneide, near Berlin, is awaiting expansion from 300 hectares to 470 hectares. Tesla wants to build a train station for freight transport, as well as storage sheds and a childcare center for employees’ children. The expansion requires the removal of a piece of forest, and local residents are angry about this, as a referendum showed in February. Now activist groups are threatening protests.

The action group ‘Tesla den Hahn abdrehen’ says it will be present next Thursday at the local municipal council meeting in Grünheide about Tesla’s growth plans. If the council decides to significantly expand the site, new actions will be taken, a spokeswoman says. On Saturday, more than a thousand environmental activists marched against the factory. The demonstrators believe that Tesla does not take the interests of local residents into account enough, but also say they fear water pollution. In early March, activists set fire to a high-voltage pylon at the factory. A week later, Musk visited the factory and called the arsonists eco-terrorists.
