Again: Apple Watch discovers heart problem and saves lives

An American man says his smartwatch saved his life after the Apple Watch detected a major heart problem. That’s how it went.

Apple Watch saves lives again

The Apple Watch has several important health functions that have saved lives before. Another story has now been shared in the United States in which the smartwatch saved a man’s life. Jeff Priest from South Carolina received a message from his Apple Watch that he had a heart problem. Without the smartwatch he would not have known anything, because he felt healthy.

In fact, Priest felt so healthy that he didn’t take the notification from his Apple Watch seriously at all. He assumed that the smartwatch was broken, because he himself had no symptoms at all. Fortunately, his wife took the report seriously and sought medical help. That was a good thing, because it was an irregular heart rhythm. In the long term, this can lead to a myocardial infarction or even a heart attack.

This function detected the heart defect

Priest’s Apple Watch had detected atrial fibrillation (afib). With this heart defect, the resting heart rate is much higher than normal. In some cases this is not accompanied by symptoms, such as with Priest. It is therefore important that the heart problem is treated as quickly as possible, but of course the condition must first be discovered.

In Priest’s case, the heart problem was discovered early by his Apple Watch. The smartwatch has an electric heart rate sensor that allows you to make an ECG (earth film). The feature can detect irregular heartbeats that can be fatal if left unnoticed. The ECG showed that Priest suffered from an irregular heart rhythm, and it is recommended that he seek immediate medical attention.

Priest did this, as a result of which he received appropriate treatment for the atrial fibrillation. With his Apple Watch he can also take an ECG at any time, without having to go to the hospital. The smartwatch has once again saved a life, this time by making an ECG. The function can be found on every Apple Watch from the Apple Watch Series 4 and newer, except for the Apple Watch SE (2022).
