AirPods Pro fit test: improve your noise cancellation with the right eartips

The AirPods Pro come standard with extra eartips in different sizes, which is important because it allows you to adjust the fit. By using the right ear tips you can close the ear canal, so that ambient noise no longer has a chance.

This will make the noise reduction work even better and allow you to fully immerse yourself in the music. The silicone eartips primarily ensure that the ear canal is closed, but also that the Pods stay in your ear better. Using advanced software technology, iOS can check whether the fit is correct.

Good fit necessary

To fully enjoy the AirPods Pro, a good fit is crucial. With the Adaptive EQ, for example, the music is automatically adjusted to the shape of your ears, so that the sound always sounds full. This is made possible by the microphone on the inside; it hears what you hear and will then adjust the audio by adjusting the mid-high and low frequencies.

If the eartips are too loose in the ear, this will result in a poorer sound experience. Using the trick below you can check whether the fit is good and whether the ear canal is properly closed.

Checking the fit of the AirPods Pro

  • Connect the AirPods to an iPhone or iPad
  • Navigate to Settings
  • Open the AirPods settings
  • Scroll down to ‘Fit and comfort’

You can also open the Bluetooth settings and tap the i symbol next to the AirPods. The AirPods settings will then open.

Do you own the AirPods Pro 2? Then you can tap ‘Fit test‘. Do you have the AirPods Pro 3? Then choose ‘Test acoustic seal‘. Read the information and tap Continue to start the test. A sound is then played to check whether the eartips are properly seated and connected. You will then see the test results.

If these are green this means that the Pods fit well in your ears, if the text is orange you should try a different size. The test is performed per pod and in some cases you may need to use a different size eartip for one ear than the other ear.

Only for AirPods Pro

The fit test is only available for the AirPods Pro and not for other models such as the AirPods 4. This is because the AirPods Pro have interchangeable ear cushions in different sizes, so it is essential to find the right size for a good seal and optimal sound quality.

The fit test uses a sound test to measure whether the ear cushions fit properly in the ear canal, which contributes to better noise reduction and sound experience. Other AirPods models such as the AirPods 4 do not have interchangeable ear pads and a fixed design, making such a fit test technically not possible or necessary.
