‘AirPods Pro get special sensors for improved control’

It is almost certain that the AirPods Pro 2 will be released soon. According to a recently surfaced patent, the operation of the AirPods Pro by special sensors is much better. And this is why.

Recently, a lot of information leaked out about the new AirPods Pro 2, which Apple is rumored to release by the end of the year. Among the features leaked so far, however, are none that describe the technology from a new Apple patent. There is talk of ultrasonic sensors, which should improve the operation of the AirPods.

Improved handling with wet fingers or gloves

The AirPods’ current capacitive touch sensors don’t work well if your fingers are wet or if you’re wearing gloves. Sensors that work on the basis of ultrasound should make this possible, according to Apple in a new patent. Another advantage is that this technique also ensures better recognition of touches under ‘normal’ circumstances.

But ultrasonic sensors of the moment also have major drawbacks, such as unintentional input by sound waves in your environment. Apple wants to counter this with special tricks, so that really only tapping with your fingers is recognized. There is also a sensor that measures the pressure exerted on the AirPods, so that only ‘real’ touches are registered. The system could be used in a future generation of the AirPods Pro, but also on the AirPods Max.

Sensors are a practical addition to the AirPods Pro

AirPods are often used outdoors and during sports, so the ultrasonic sensors are certainly a practical addition. For example, think of sweaty hands during an extended run, or cold winters where you don’t want to walk outside without gloves.

Unfortunately, it is not yet 100 percent certain that these sensors will come to the next AirPods. While the existence of a patent often points to new features and products at Apple – it is no guarantee that the concepts described will actually be used. Anyway, the patents offer an interesting look behind the scenes and give a hint of what to expect in the future. Undoubtedly to be continued.
