Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato

The always idiosyncratic design house Zagato has indulged itself on the Alfa Romeo Giulia. The result is this Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato, a shortened and coupe-converted Giulia peppered with references to the SZ of yesteryear.

The Italian design house and Alfa Romeo do have something in common. Although Zagato has also regularly indulged in cars from brands such as Fiat, Lancia, Maserati, Ferrari and Aston Martin, we often encounter Alfa Romeo in Zagato’s portfolio. The last time Zagato put forward a special Alfa Romeo was in 2011. In that year, Zagato celebrated with the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale – based on the Dodge Viper – that Alfa Romeo had been involved in motor racing for a hundred years. With this Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato, Zagato celebrates its 100-year relationship with Alfa Romeo. This time it is basically an Alfa!

Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato next to SZ it is inspired by.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato is, as its name probably implies, based on the Giulia. This Giulia SWB Zagato, commissioned by a German customer, is basically a shortened Giulia Quadrifoglio that Zagato has pumped up to GTAm spec. The biturbo 2.9 V6 is therefore good for 540 hp and 600 Nm and those forces go to all four wheels via a manual six-speed gearbox. Zagato has folded a striking coupé carriage about the technology. Zagato’s creation is interspersed with references to the SZ presented in 1990. Like the Alfa Romeo 75-based SZ, the Giulia SWB Zagato has a relatively stocky appearance, a steeply sloping shoulder line and single-line taillights. The Giulia SWB Zagato also has headlights placed relatively low in the nose. It seems that it will stick to this one copy.
