Android 11 currently runs on just under a quarter of all Android phones, making Android 10 still the most popular version. This is evident from the new distribution figures that Google has recently published.
Android 11 update
Google kicked off the stable version of Android 12 on October 4, and a few weeks later, the update was the first to be rolled out for Pixel devices. Yet, as usual, we still talk about the Android 11 update that appeared in 2020. This version still does not run on the majority of phones.
Google has stopped sharing distribution figures of the different Android versions on a monthly basis for some time, but now we get new figures in Android Studio to see. Android 11 runs on 24.3 percent of all Android phones, while Android 10 is still the most seen with a 26.5 percent share. Furthermore, Android 9 Pie is still common, because this three-year-old version runs on 18.2 percent of the devices.
Improved update policy
Because distribution figures are now shared very irregularly, it is difficult to draw conclusions now whether or not updates are being rolled out faster than before. It is striking that manufacturers have made great efforts in recent months to update their devices for longer. We saw that at Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Google, among others. In most cases, it’s just an improved security update policy.
We do see that some manufacturers manage to update their top devices faster. An example is Samsung that this month already prepared Android 12 for its S21 series. Still, Android 12 currently runs on less than 0.1 percent of all Android phones and hence the version is not shown in the distribution figures. Although the figures are about three weeks old, according to 9To5Google.
