Apple products often last quite a few years. But it is of course also nice when a new version is released regularly. However, that doesn’t always happen, as Apple seems to have forgotten some of its popular products. We have listed 4 Apple devices that are actually ready for a major update!
1. iMac: 1 year and 7 months old
The current 24-inch iMac was released in April 2021 and has an M1 chip, just like the MacBook Air 2020. The MacBook Air has already been updated with an M2 chip in the 2022 version. The iPad Pro 2022 and the 13-inch MacBook Pro now also have an update with this chip. That’s why it’s high time to upgrade the iMac as well.
It will probably take until the end of 2023 before an update will actually come. According to reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, you should not even expect an M2 version of the iMac. He said the iMac will be one of the first releases with an M3 chip.
2. AirPods Max: 1 year and 11 months old
The AirPods Max appeared in December 2020 and are now almost two years old. They are the oldest AirPods still being made new by Apple. They are also the most expensive AirPods (€ 520), but they lack a number of functions that the AirPods Pro 2 do have.
For example, the H2 chip in the AirPods Pro 2 provides even better noise reduction (noise cancellation) and the small earphones have adaptive transparency. Also handy: they can be found in your ‘Find my’ app.
The above improvements would already be a nice update for the AirPods Max, but it can of course be even better. The AirPods Max could also use some new colors. Furthermore, a MagSafe and a USB-C connection would not be out of place in an update for the headphones.
Still, it could be that an update is coming soon. Apple usually releases a set of new AirPods once a year. And the AirPods Max may very well be one of the next Apple devices to receive an update.
3. Mac Pro (2 years and 11 months old)
The Mac Pro is one of the last Apple products still for sale that contains an Intel chip. The rumors for a new version with Apple silicon have been buzzing on the internet for two years.
At the Peek Performance event earlier this year, Apple made a striking statement. At the time, the release of a new Mac Pro was hinted at, but that turned out not to be the case. Apple did say “that’s for another day”, which means an update is coming.
According to Mark Gurman, the Mac Pro will get an M2 Ultra chip and there will even be configurations with an M2 Extreme chip for sale. Other than that, no specifications are known yet.
4. Mac mini (2 years old)
There were also rumors for a while that a new Mac mini would appear in 2022, but that ultimately did not happen. Probably this was mainly to promote the Mac Studio. Perhaps a Mac mini with m2 chip will appear in 2023.
The Mac mini hasn’t been updated in two years, and the most recent version still has an M1 chip. Apple doesn’t even have to change that much internally to upgrade the Mac mini with an M2 chip.
Incidentally, the high-end Mac mini has not had an update for more than four years. In 2020, the high-end Mac mini received a small upgrade by doubling the storage, but otherwise it is still the same as the 2018 version. Remarkably, this high-end Mac mini from 2018 (and 2020) still has an Intel chip.
An upgrade to an M2 Pro chip would certainly not be out of place with this high-end Mac mini. That also makes the Mac mini one of the Apple devices that must receive an update soon!
