Apple has released the first test version of iOS 18.4! The software version is intended for developers, so that they can get started with the latest functions. It is a small update in the Netherlands and Belgium, because Apple Intelligence is not yet available here. In iOS 18.4 Beta 1, therefore, small digestings are mainly implemented in the software. That is not all, because Apple also resolves a problem in CarPlay.
With the new software version, CarPlay shows more applications on the home screen in your car. Two rows of five apps can now be seen on the screen. Especially with cars with a large display this was an annoying problem, because Apple leaves a large part of the screen unused with CarPlay. With iOS 18.4 that changes, because then a row will be added to the CarPlay home screen.
More apps on the home screen
From iOS 18.4, CarPlay shows three rows with five applications on the screen of your car. That’s good news, because that’s how you open more apps with just one tap on the screen. Do you only use a limited number of applications via CarPlay? Then there is a good chance that even all apps will fit on one screen, so that you no longer have to switch between different tabs. Yet not every version of CarPlay gets this option.
CarPlay only shows the third row with applications if the screen of your car is large enough. It is not yet clear where this limit is. The renewed version of CarPlay has now surfaced in the first cars, making it increasingly known about the adjustment in the operating system. With screens of 9 inches, CarPlay shows a total of ten applications, Displays of 14 inch do have the new display with fifteen apps.

Apple therefore makes a small but handy improvement with CarPlay. Especially with large cars this was a problem, because Apple left a lot of space unused with CarPlay. That will change from iOS 18.4, CarPlay shows fifteen applications as standard with large displays. You don’t have to adjust anything in the settings for that, with iOS 18.4 the new display will appear automatically.
