After declining demand and production cuts in 2024, Apple has discontinued the first generation Apple Vision Pro.
Apple has discontinued the Apple Vision Pro
A message appeared in October The Information stating that Apple had abruptly reduced production of the Apple Vision Pro. It now appears that the device is no longer in active production.
According to the report, production cuts already started at the beginning of the summer. This indicates that Apple has enough Vision Pros in stock to meet remaining demand. Looking at the past, it is not unusual for Apple to do this with products that are in low demand. It more or less happened with the iPhone 12 mini as well.
Second generation Vision Pro postponed
According to The Information, enough parts have been produced for 500,000 to 600,000 headsets. The warehouses are full of undelivered parts now that production of the Vision Pro has stopped. The Chinese company Luxshare, which assembles the Vision Pro, was reportedly forced to stop production by Apple in November. Luxshare produced about 1,000 Vision Pros per day in October, half as many as at its peak.
In addition, Apple has postponed work on the second generation of Vision Pro for at least a year. Apple has instructed its suppliers to prepare for the production of four million cheap headsets. This is half of the total number of Vision Pros that Apple initially instructed suppliers to produce. This suggests that sales expectations for the cheaper version are even lower.
Possibly an update
The declining demand for the Apple Vision Pro is attributed to the high price of € 4,799 and insufficient content. Apple CEO Tim Cook previously described the device as a ‘early adopter product‘, aimed at users interested in advanced technology and not at the general public.
Although production of the second generation Vision Pro has stopped, there are indications that an update will be forthcoming, according to The Information. An update with limited changes to the design, but with, for example, only a new chip. Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman confirm this. They expect a version with an M5 chip and Apple Intelligence. According to Gurman The device may be launched on the market between autumn 2025 and spring 2026.
