Apple has major problems with CarPlay 2.0: this is going on

Apple has major problems with CarPlay 2.0, so that the release of the operating system has been postponed again. What’s going on?

CarPlay 2.0 postponed

Apple has again postponed the release of CarPlay 2.0. Where it was previously reading on Apple’s website that the new generation of CarPlay would come in 2024, the company has now silently removed that announcement. This confirms Apple that the new version of CarPlay has been delayed. The company has not added a new date to the website. What’s going on at Apple?

Apple has major problems with CarPlay 2.0: this is going on

1. CarPlay 1.0 is forgotten

After the announcement of CarPlay 2.0 in 2022, Apple brought virtually no major innovations to the current version of the operating system. It seems that Apple is preparing all adjustments for the next generation of CarPlay, but that is why the first generation is forgotten. That is a big problem, certainly because not all cars will soon receive support for the renewed version of CarPlay.

It is striking that Apple only brings all innovations to CarPlay 2.0. For example, a number of features is easy to add to the existing version of CarPlay. Think of the weather app, personalizing the home screen or adding your own backgrounds. These changes only come to CarPlay 2.0, which means that the release takes unnecessarily long. Apple could roll these functions in phases without any problems at CarPlay 1.0, but the company chooses to release everything at CarPlay 2.0 in one go. That needs more time, resulting in several delays.

2. Car brands do not give permission

With CarPlay 2.0, the operating system is much better integrated into the vehicle. This way you can control the radio and temperature via CarPlay and the fuel level can be seen on the screen. That is not possible, Apple has to work closely with different car manufacturers for that. Especially without problems that is not at Apple, for example, GM has already indicated that it will stop Apple CarPlay.

That is not very strange, because Apple gets access to much more information about the vehicle. Good agreements must be made about this with car manufacturers, which may need much more time than the company expected. At Apple, this causes problems with rolling out CarPlay 2.0. There must be enough car brands willing to take over the new generation of the operating system, because otherwise CarPlay 2.0 will not be successful.

Release of CarPlay 2.0

There are currently no cars that work with CarPlay 2.0. It is unknown to which vehicles the new generation of the operating system does come. Chances are that only the latest cars will receive support for CarPlay 2.0. That may be another reason for problems at Apple, because the new version of CarPlay is therefore available for only a limited number of users.

It does not seem that the release of the renewed CarPlay is coming. Apple still has to solve quite a number of problems with CarPlay 2.0 before the operating system is officially released. In iOS 18.3 new codes for CarPlay have recently been found, which confirms that Apple is in any case working on the major update. When CarPlay 2.0 finally appears? That remains unclear for the time being.
