Apple is working on affordable monitor for MacBook

A new, affordable Apple monitor seems on the way. Apple is rumored to have plans for a cheaper variant of the Apple Pro Display XDR.

Apple monitor: cheaper screen on the way?

This leaves the very well-introduced Apple insider Mark Gurman of Bloomberg know. Currently, the tech giant from Cupertino has one Apple monitor in its store: the Pro Display XDR. That is not an external display for the average consumer, because the monitor costs more than five thousand euros.

Years ago, Apple also sold the Thunderbolt Display, which had a more accessible price tag: a thousand euros. The monitor had a 27-inch display and was sold by Apple from July 2021 to June 2016.

Everything indicates that the company is developing such a monitor again. “I’m confident Apple will launch a new external monitor for its latest Macs,” Gurman wrote in his weekly newsletter. The Apple insider expects something like this to be a ‘hot-seller’ for those looking for a monitor for the MacBook Pro, but finds a Pro Display XDR too expensive.

Gurman expects the display to be very similar to the Pro Display XDR, but at a more accessible price. “Right now, the cost of building that monitor has probably come down, and with a few tweaks and maybe a small reduction in brightness, Apple can build a monitor of comparable quality for maybe about half the price.”

Two monitors

Earlier, Apple leaker Dylandkt predicted that Apple has plans for two monitors. One is cheaper and has a 24-inch screen, the other is more advanced and equipped with a 27-inch display.

The 24-inch monitor would be based on the current 24-inch iMac. It has a ‘normal’ LCD screen without a mini LED. The larger screen of 27-inch would be equipped with mini LED and has ProMotion technology. We expect this to be the monitor Gurman is talking about.

When the new Apple monitor will be released is still unknown. The prices are also guesswork, although we expect that the 24-inch screen, just like the Thunderbolt Display, will cost about a thousand euros. The 27-inch monitor sits way above that; Gurman is counting on a price of about 2500 euros.
