Apple officially announced iOS 16 at its WWDC keynote on Monday, June 6. The iPhone software gets a lot of new functions. This article tells you everything you need to know about iOS 16.
iOS 16 official: these features are coming to your iPhone soon
Tim Cook officially announced the highly anticipated iOS 16 at Apple’s WWDC keynote on Monday, June 6. Just like previous major updates for the iPhone, iOS 16 also contains dozens of innovations, both large and small. In this article you will find the most important new iOS 16 features in a row.
1. New lock screen
iOS 16 gets a new lock screen with a refreshed design, which is fully customizable. This way you can adjust the colors of the clock and the whole has a lot more depth. The fonts are also customizable. You can also add widgets, such as a calendar. For example, you can also see your activity rings directly on your lock screen – provided you use an Apple Watch.
With the new Wallpaper Gallery you have a better overview of your backgrounds. That’s important, because there are all kinds of new wallpapers available in iOS 16. These include new animated wallpapers, which flow smoothly into your home screen. Think of lightning bolts and a rotating globe. Notifications will also look different from now on. These are now at the bottom of the screen.

2. Focus Mode
Focus Mode has been expanded, including on the lock screen and within Safari. This way you can choose which tabs you want to see in different Focus Modes – and which ones you don’t. Other apps can now also use Focus Mode. You can save multiple lock screens in iOS 16, which belong, for example, to work or sleep mode.
3. Messages
In the Messages app you can delete soon sent messages and adjust them afterwards. SharePlay is also coming to the Messages app. So you no longer need to initiate a FaceTime call to use the feature. Better voice recognition makes it easier for you to use voice typing in iOS 16. For example, the improved voice recognition features emoji dictation and automatic punctuation.

4. Wallet App
Apple would like to replace your wallet with the Wallet app. Soon you will be able to easily share digital keys via messaging apps, including WhatsApp. Apple Pay is also being expanded, with Apple Pay Later. With this function you can pay in four installments.

5. Maps App
The new Maps app is coming to the Netherlands and ten other countries in iOS 16. The updated app allows users to plan routes with multiple stops. In addition, all kinds of Maps features, such as more detailed maps, are coming to multiple apps – provided developers get their hands on them.
6. Family Sharing
Apple makes it easier to share your device with your family. It also gives users more control over the apps and content that children can access. With the new iCloud Shared Photo Gallery, you and your family or friends can automatically share photos with each other.

7. Safety Check
Victims of domestic violence can use Safety Check to restrict other people’s access to all kinds of functions. For example, attackers can no longer see the location of their partners via the Find My app. This makes it easier for the victims to get to safety.
8. Smart Home
Apple brings major updates for Smart Home to iOS 16. Thanks to Matter support, it becomes a lot easier to set up all kinds of different accessories in the Home app. The app is much clearer thanks to its new design. This allows you to see all accessories at a glance. There are different categories, divided into rooms. Think of your bedroom, living room and kitchen.
9. CarPlay
CarPlay is getting a massive visual upgrade. Current cars come with screens that are all different sizes and aspect ratios. CarPlay will now adapt to this. According to Apple, CarPlay looks “as if it was made specifically for it” on any screen. The manufacturer has not yet announced much about the new CarPlay – but according to Apple we will hear more soon. The first cars with the new CarPlay will appear in 2023.
