Apple Pencil 3 gets a new feature – and it’s useful

Apple will soon not only release new iPads, but is also working on new iPad accessories. According to the latest rumors, an Apple Pencil 3 will come with a new function. You need to know this.

Apple Pencil 3 gets a new feature

There have been rumors for some time that Apple is working on a Pencil 3 with Find My support, but now it is clear that a new feature is being added. That function is called ‘squeeze’.

Clues to this have been found in the code of iPadOS 17.5 beta 1 recently released to developers. The squeeze function can be used for quick interactions such as adding shapes, signatures, stickers, or a text field. You’ll probably activate the feature by squeezing the surface of the Apple Pencil.

New feature is not for the Apple Pencil 2

Apple Pencil 2 only supports double-tapping to switch between different tools in certain apps. There are no pressure sensors in the surface – only in the tip. That means the new squeeze feature in iPadOS 17.5 beta isn’t for the Apple Pencil 2, but for an unreleased Apple Pencil 3.

Additionally, it’s interesting that Apple has updated the Apple Pencil pairing interface to support new, non-existing hardware. Additionally, iPadOS 17.4 has a new version of the PencilKit API, which developers can use to make their apps compatible with Apple Pencil. Apple has not yet announced what new features PencilKit 3 adds. Apple Pencil is rumored to support 3 interchangeable magnetic tips.

The iPad Pro is expected to have a slimmer design with an OLED screen and the M3 chip for the first time. The iPad Air, on the other hand, retains the same design, but now with the M2 chip. Apple is also rumored to be introducing a larger 12.9-inch iPad Air for the first time.
