In addition to iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, Apple also released iOS 17.7 and iPadOS 17.7. Which devices are these updates for? Here’s what you need to know.
iOS 17.7 available
Apple released no fewer than ten updates on Monday, September 16, including iOS 18 and iOS 17.7. This year, iOS 18 is the biggest iPhone update, bringing a number of new features to the smartphone. For the iPad, iPadOS 18 is the update of 2024, but iPadOS 17.7 is also available. Which update should you install? And for which devices are the software versions? They list them for you.
For iPhone: iOS 17.7
In addition to iOS 18, iOS 17.7 has also been released for the iPhone. The update is intended for users who do not yet want to switch to iOS 18. Often, the new functions in a new iOS version do not yet work properly. Apple tests all features extensively, but a number of software errors are only filtered out with iOS 18.0.1 or later. Important improvements are also implemented then.
Do you want to avoid these software errors? Then we recommend that you install iOS 17.7. You can then be sure that the security of your iPhone remains in order, but you will not receive any new functions. This way you can decide for yourself when to install iOS 18 on your smartphone. You can find both updates in the settings of your iPhone under ‘General > Software update’. Good to know: you do not have to install iOS 17.7, you can also switch directly to iOS 18. The updates are available for the iPhone XS and newer.
For iPad: iPadOS 17.7
Apple has released similar updates for the iPad. iPadOS 18 brings the calculator to the iPad, improves the Notes app, and lets you personalize the home screen. Some of these features can also be found in iOS 18. While iPhone users can install iOS 17.7, iPad users can of course install iPadOS 17.7. This update also only includes security updates. The software version is available for:
- iPad Pro 13 inch;
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation and later);
- iPad Pro 10.5 inch;
- iPad Pro 11 inch (first generation and later);
- iPad Air (3rd generation and later);
- iPad (6th generation and later);
- iPad mini (5th generation and later).
The same applies to the iPad as to the iPhone: you should install iPadOS 17.7 primarily if you want to avoid any software bugs that iPadOS 18 may have. With iPadOS 18.0.1, Apple fixes important issues and makes improvements. Are you planning to wait for that update? Then download iPadOS 17.7 so that the security of your iPad is updated again. You also don’t need to install iPadOS 17.7 to download iPadOS 18 on the iPad.
