Apple has its this week free Apple Sports app released in the Netherlands, giving sports fans access to real-time scores, statistics and match information for a wide range of international competitions.
The launch in the Netherlands is part of a large-scale European expansion that has brought the app to more than twenty new countries, including: BelgiumDenmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary and several other European markets. The app has been available in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada since February 2024, and was expanded to Germany, France, Italy and Spain in September 2025.
Apple Sports for iPhone and iPad
Apple Sports is a free app from Apple that allows you to always follow real-time sports results, statistics and match information from international competitions such as football, basketball, Formula 1 and tennis on your iPhone and via widgets on your iPad.

You simply choose your favorite teams and competitions, organize them clearly in the app and receive live scores on your lock screen and Dynamic Island, while widgets on iPad and Mac ensure that you immediately see the latest updates, even without an app.
Simplicity and user-friendly
Apple Sports distinguishes itself by its focus on speed and simplicity, without unnecessary menus or advertisements. ‘Sports fans love Apple Sports, they find it a great app to keep up to date with their favorite teams and competitions. The results are delivered incredibly quickly’said Oliver Schusser, Vice President of Apple TV, Apple Music, Sports and Beats.

The app offers an easy-to-use Apple-developed interface where users can select their favorite leagues and teams. Favorite teams are at the top throughout the app, so that the most important results and news items are immediately visible. On the home screen, the competition agenda is organized by competition, with intuitive options to adjust the order.
Competition support
Apple Sports currently supports a wide range of international competitions, including prominent European football leagues such as the Champions League (men’s and women’s), Europa League, Conference League, Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1 and Serie A. Formula 1, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS, NCAA basketball and football, NFL, WNBA, NASCAR and tennis (men’s and women’s) are also available.

What is striking is that Dutch competitions such as the Eredivisie are currently not supported yet. The app currently focuses on top international competitions, although Apple has indicated that more sports and competitions will be added in the future.
Live Activities and Dynamic Island integration
One of the most notable features of Apple Sports is the use of Live Activities. This allows users to receive real-time updates directly on their iPhone and Apple Watch lock screens. This feature requires iOS 18 or later, and you can set it up in advance for upcoming matches.
For users with an iPhone 14 Pro or newer, live scores are also displayed in the Dynamic Island, the dynamic area at the top of the screen. By pressing the Dynamic Island for a long time, you get more information, such as the last play action. This feature makes it easier for sports fans to follow matches without having to unlock their phone every time.
Widgets for all Apple devices
With the recent update to version 3.5 Apple Sports gained support for widgets, allowing users to personalize their home screen with real-time sports information. The widgets are available in two configurations: a ‘My Teams’ view that focuses on followed teams, and a ‘Leagues’ view that provides comprehensive coverage of entire competitions.

A special advantage is that these widgets work not only on the iPhone, but also on iPad and Mac, allowing users to access scores and schedules of their favorite teams and competitions on all Apple devices. Users can configure widgets differently on each device and there are no restrictions on the number of widgets that can be added.
