‘Apple VR glasses get 14 cameras – here’s the function behind them’

There are new rumors circulating about the functions of Apple’s AR/VR glasses. This one would get as many as 14 cameras.

Apple VR/AR Glasses: Lifelike Avatars

Earlier this week, it was rumored that the Apple AR/VR headset would be launched at the end of this year. Now we get a new gossip on our plate. The headset would get as many as 14 cameras to display lifelike avatars. One blog post from Wayne Ma van The Information reports that the placement and integration of these 14 cameras is a huge puzzle for engineers of this ‘Apple Reality’.

The cameras (on the inside of the device) would track the user’s face. This should ensure that the virtual image accurately reflects the expressions and mouth movements. This is an essential function for the Apple AR/VR glasses to succeed.

Former Design Chief, Jony Ive, remains involved

Wayne Ma’s report also says that Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive has remained involved in the headset project. Not as an employee, but as an external consultant of the company. This concerns the placement of the battery, the aforementioned 14 cameras and the ergonomics.

The headset itself is expected to be powered by two chips. The better of the two is rumored to be as powerful as the M2 chip. We expect this in the new MacBook Air and iPad models later this year.

‘Apple AR/VR glasses function is not gaming’

The Apple AR/VR glasses features don’t seem to focus on gaming. Headset employees reportedly disagree. Rumors have it that Apple is not developing controllers for the headset. The functions of the Apple AR/VR glasses must be controlled via hand movements in a vacuum. Another control option is a ‘clothespin-like’ finger clip as input to the device.

We expect the headset to run without external devices. The rumors have been reporting for some time that the Apple AR/VR glasses are a standalone device will be. The latest sources say Apple’s headset will be released in 2023.
