‘Apple VR headset 2022 focuses on gaming and communication’

There is a good chance that a completely new Apple product will appear in 2022: the Apple VR headset. Now it also becomes clear what the headset is intended for: gaming, media and communication.

Apple VR headset 2022

The knowledgable Mark Gurman of Bloomberg let us know in his weekly Power On newsletter. There have been rumors about the VR headset for some time, but until now it was unclear what the most important functionalities of the VR device are.

Gurman thinks the headset focuses on three ‘killer’ functions: gaming, media and communication. “Gaming should be a strong focus of the machine,” Gurman writes. “Especially given that the device has multiple processors, a fan, extremely high-resolution screens and its own App Store.”

Then the other pillar: media. Gurman expects Apple to partner with media companies to create content that can be viewed on a VR device. He does not provide more details, but it may be, for example, films that you watch in a virtual cinema environment.

The VR headset also focuses on communication. You can also communicate with Animoji, says Gurman. This means that the device recognizes your facial expressions. A ‘VR FaceTime-like experience’ would also be possible. What Gurman means by this is not clear. Perhaps you can meet in a virtual 3D room, something that is already possible with VRChat.

Earlier rumors

There have been many rumors about the Apple VR headset already. For example, the device would be relatively light and have two 4K screens with micro-LED technology. The VR glasses also have 15 cameras, Wifi 6E and an advanced processor, which is about as powerful as the M1 processor of the Mac.

According to Ming-Chi Kuo – another reliable Apple analyst – mass production of the Apple headset will start in the second quarter of 2022. The device is expected to be launched in the fourth quarter (October, November or December) of 2022.
