The new Apple Watch Ultra will have a micro LED screen instead of an OLED screen. What’s better about the new screen?
Apple Watch Ultra gets a new screen
The new model of the Apple Watch Ultra will most likely be equipped with a micro-LED screen. The current Apple Watch Ultra already has an OLED screen, making it the first Apple device with such a screen. With the new Apple Watch Ultra, Apple is taking it a step further.
The Apple Watch Ultra will be Apple’s first product with a micro-LED screen. In addition, the new Apple Watch Ultra will have a larger screen: the size of the new screen is 2.1 inches. The current Apple Watch Ultra has a screen diagonal of 1.93 inches.
What is the difference between OLED and Micro LED?
So Apple is going to switch to micro-LED, but what does this mean? And what is the difference with an OLED screen? We list the differences for you.
Oled: huge color range with a major disadvantage
OLED excels especially in the color range, color saturation and black levels. Starting with the latter: OLED is able to conjure up deep black levels on the screen. You notice this, for example, when watching movies and series, because the difference between black and gray is clearly visible.
The big disadvantage of OLED: the loss of image quality. You need natural materials to make OLED screens and they burn in over time. In this way there is a gradual loss in brightness and image quality over time.
Micro-LED: economical version of the OLED screen
Micro-LED can best be described as the better version of OLED, with one important difference: the way it is made. This screen technique is made using non-natural materials. As a result, there is no risk of burn-in screens with micro-LED.
Sustainability is therefore a major advantage of micro-LED. The screen type also excels in economy. Micro-LED is more energy-efficient than OLED and therefore has less impact on the battery life of your Apple Watch. The disadvantage of micro-LED is the price: this is more expensive than OLED. The Apple Watch Ultra with a micro-LED screen may therefore become even more expensive.
Apple Watch will not receive (major) updates in 2023
The Apple Watch Ultra will therefore receive a major upgrade with the micro-LED screen, but is not expected before 2024. The Apple Watch Series 9 is also unlikely to receive any major changes this year. According to the latest rumors, Apple is working on a sensor to measure blood pressure and glucose level, but these functions will not appear until 2024.
