Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 have way more storage (here’s why)

The Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 have much more storage than previous Watches. Why did Apple expand storage space and what can you do with it?

New Apple Watches have more storage

This week, Apple also announced two new smartwatches in addition to the iPhone 15. The Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 run on the new S9 chip, making the devices a lot faster. The battery life of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is even longer, you can now use the advanced watch for a maximum of 72 hours. That is the longest battery life ever for an Apple Watch.

Both the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 have been upgraded mainly on the inside, the design of the devices is virtually unchanged. The memory of the watches has also been significantly expanded, because the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 have no less than 64 GB of memory. With previous Watches this was still 32 GB. What do you need so much storage space for?

Twice the memory for the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 therefore have twice as much storage as previous smartwatches from Apple. This most likely has to do with the new S9 chip, which is more powerful and efficient. This new processor is based on the A15 Bionic chip, which we previously saw in the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. However, you cannot use all 64 GB for your own files.

A large part of the memory is used for Apple’s own software, including watchOS. Now that the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 have so much storage, updating to the latest watchOS version is no longer a problem. This was sometimes the case in the past, especially with the Apple Watch Series 3.

The first generations of the Apple Watch only had 8 GB of storage space, so the current 64 GB is a significant improvement. Unfortunately, that does not mean that you can put 64 GB of media on your Apple Watch Series 9, as approximately 25 percent of the total storage is intended for that. So you can put 16 GB of photos, videos, music and other apps on your Watch.
