In 2024, Apple released many new products, but surprisingly we did not see an Apple Watch Ultra 3. It is the first time since the introduction of the smartwatch that Apple skips a year in releasing a new generation. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 did appear in a new color, the device is now also available with a black titanium casing.

In the background, Apple is now working hard on the new features of the Apple Watch Ultra 3. The smartwatch is expected to be released next year and will be even more advanced than the current model. According to the usually reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, the new Apple Watch Ultra will have a function that could save your life. According to him, the third generation of the smartwatch will have a satellite connection for the first time.

Sending messages via satellite

Do you have an iPhone 14 or newer and does the device run iOS 18? Then it is already possible to send a message via a satellite connection. The option will appear automatically if you do not have mobile coverage, the satellite connection makes it possible to still send a text message in that case. According to Gurman, Apple is bringing the same feature to the Apple Watch Ultra 3, making it Apple’s first smartwatch with a satellite connection.

You will soon also be able to use the Apple Watch Ultra 3 if you have no mobile signal, but still want to send a message to family or friends. The feature is not intended for emergencies, you must use SOS emergency notification. It is therefore expected that the satellite connection will also come to SOS emergency notification on the Apple Watch. This is already the case with the iPhone 14 and newer, so you can also reach the emergency services if you cannot make a call or send a text message.

Release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3

The fact that the Apple Watch Ultra 3 will soon also be expanded with the feature is good news, because this way you will always remain accessible. In dangerous situations you can send a message to family or friends, even if you have no mobile signal. You are no longer dependent on your iPhone, which is useful if it is lost or damaged, for example. The function is probably especially useful abroad, as in the Netherlands the mobile network is largely covered.

We still have to wait a while for the release of the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple will probably present the new smartwatch at the same time as the iPhone 17.
