The connectivity is greatly improved with the next Apple Watch Ultra. The third generation receives support for 5G and for satellite connection. Where the iPhones have had satellite connection for years, the Apple Watch is still limited to the local or mobile connection. From the Apple Watch Ultra 3 that is no longer the case, because Gurman expects the smartwatch to be expanded with satellite connection. According to him, that will be the most important improvement at the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.

Satellite connection and 5G

With the satellite connection it is always possible to send messages, even if you do not have a mobile range. In addition, you can make emergency calls via the satellite connection, so that the emergency services can always be informed. The Apple Watch Ultra is primarily intended for fanatic (outside) athletes, so the satellite connection is a big advantage for the smartwatch. Brands such as Garmin have had smartwatches with satellite connection for some time.

Another advantage is the introduction of the 5G network on the smartwatch. The current Apple Watches have support for 4G LTE, while the iPhone has been working with 5G since 2020. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 becomes Apple’s first smartwatch with 5G, which is probably made possible by a new chip. We will probably see Apple’s new C1 modem or a similar processor at the Apple Watch Ultra in 2025.

With the new functions of the Apple Watch Ultra 3, it is therefore no longer necessary to bring your iPhone. Thanks to the 5G and satellite connection you can always be reached via the Apple Watch. It is still unclear whether sending messages via the satellite connection also comes to the Netherlands and Belgium. With the iPhone, the feature is only available in the United States and Canada, in other countries this satellite function is missing for the time being.

Calling or making an emergency call via satellite is possible here on the iPhone, so it seems that those functions also come to the Apple Watch Ultra 3.
