The next Apple Watch might get a special connection to satellites. This will allow you to send short messages in an emergency, even without mobile coverage.
Send short messages via satellites on Apple Watch
Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman said so in his most recent newsletter. There have been rumors of short satellite messaging for the iPhone before, but not before for the Apple Watch.
Just before the launch of the iPhone 13, it was reported that in an emergency it could be connected to satellites.
During the Apple event of the iPhone 13, however, nothing was said about it. However, Mark Gurman believes that the necessary technology is probably already in the iPhone 13, but that the function will only be rolled out sometime in 2022.
Now the Apple analyst writes in his most recent newsletter that the Apple Watch will also get this function with satellites. The Apple Watch of 2022 or 2023 may be Apple’s first smartwatch with this support.
Three new Apple smartwatches in 2022
According to the latest rumors, we will get three new Apple Watches this year. Both Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo (another well-known Apple analyst) think we’ll get an Apple Watch Series 8, a new Apple Watch SE, and an extreme sports version.
It is not yet known which of these new Apple Watch Series 8 models will be able to send messages via satellites. But the regular Apple Watch Series 8 and the sports model are expected to get this feature.
Gurman does say that the option to use satellites to send short messages with your Apple Watch is likely aimed at specific locations with no cellular coverage. According to the Apple analyst, Apple eventually wants to build its own satellite network, but those plans will take at least a few years.
