Will there be a new one?
The Golf has been one of the pillars of the Volkswagen empire for several decades. That may well be different in the future. According to Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer, it is currently open whether there will be a completely new Golf after the current generation.
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer does in an interview with the German newspaper Welt a very interesting statement about the future of the Golf. According to the CEO, no decision has yet been made on the arrival of a new Golf after the departure of the current eighth generation of the model.
According to Schäfer, the development costs are extremely high, partly due to the increasingly strict emission standards. The CEO says that Volkswagen has yet to see whether it is worth developing a new generation that does not have a regular life cycle of about seven to eight years. The current and eighth generation Golf was presented in 2019 and is currently about three years old. Volkswagen is currently working on a facelift. We expect the upgraded Golf in 2023. After that, the model is expected to have just under three years ahead of us, which would mean that its successor should arrive around 2026/2027. Whether that will actually happen is not yet certain.
The Volkswagen CEO says that the demand for electric cars is developing rapidly. With the ID3, Volkswagen has an electric Golf alternative. It is obvious that the ID3 and the Golf will merge into one fully electric model in the future.
Volkswagen Golf IX
If Volkswagen nevertheless decides to come up with a new ninth generation of the model after the Golf VIII, it is not inconceivable that that car will be on a further development of the current MQB Evo base. It would also be best to cut the scissors in the number of variants in which the Golf appears. For example, Volkswagen also comes with a new generation Passat, which is only available as a Variant. This model will probably also use a further developed MQB basis. According to Schäfer, there will be more clarity about the future of the Golf within a year.
