Asian Android users get ads on their lock screen

Android users in Asia will start seeing ads on their phone’s lock screens from next month. No less than 400 million lock screens will soon show commercial expressions. For the time being, however, this does not seem to be coming to Europe or the Netherlands.

Advertising on your lock screen

Company Glance is working on technology that allows you to see advertisements even when your phone is locked. Advertising company InMobi (parent company of Glance) will soon show advertisements on the lock screen. InMobi is also increasingly active in the United States, which is why there are also fears for this new way of advertising.

A way that is controversial. Just like with smart televisions that are full of advertisements for movies and streaming services that you do not have at your disposal without payment, it is also the case with smartphones that commerce is increasingly finding its way into Android. Although you pay for the device (whether that is a TV set or a telephone), you are still confronted with commercial expressions.

Now they also ensure that devices can be cheaper. In the television world, brands make deals with third parties that would allow them to offer their televisions cheaper. However, as a consumer you will have to deal with advertisements and advertisements within the menus of the televisions. This is something similar, but on the lock screen of your smartphone.

Glance

However, Glance does promise that it is content that you actually find interesting. So you won’t get an advertisement for a children’s program if you only watch content for an older audience. However, it is unclear which companies Glance works with to show those advertisements or on which devices this takes place. And, not unimportant: whether you can turn it off.

Do you think this could come to the Netherlands soon? Plus: are there ads that you will appreciate, or is the option to turn it off essential for you? Leave your opinion below this post.
