Those interested in a flagship, but one with a smaller screen, should take a look at the ASUS Zenfone 9. The screen measures 5.9 inches, but it comes with the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. In addition, the camera also screams “high-end”. The phone will be in stores from August 28 for 799 euros.
ASUS Zenfone 9
Tiny smartphones with powerful specs are an extinct breed, going so far as to get petitions calling for manufacturers to change them. One company has heard that plea since last year, and now ASUS is introducing its Zenfone 9. It is a premium smartphone with a well-considered design. The engineers have to take into account a compact housing.
And by compact we mean really small. The screen panel measures 5.9 inches. The plastic housing comes in striking colors and has sufficient grip in the hand. In addition, the phone is IP68 water resistant. On the side is a fingerprint scanner and there is also room for a 3.5 mm audio jack.
The screen is a Samsung-made 120Hz Super AMOLED panel, which comes without LTPO functionality. It’s the same panel as its predecessor, the Zenfone 9, but ASUS stated in a Q&A session that Androidworld also participated in that it has focused on many different aspects of the phone this time.

gimbal camera
Take the camera for example. ASUS uses the high-quality 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor for Zenfone 9, and combines it with a remarkable stabilization solution. A built-in gimbal that stabilizes the phone over 6 axes. The technology works together with electronic image stabilization and, according to ASUS, the gimbal works better than the classic optical image stabilization found in most flagships. The Zenfone 9 and its gimbal stabilization also promise to take excellent night photos.
Furthermore, Zenfone 9 has a 12 MP wide-angle camera and a 12 MP selfie camera. Another point that ASUS considers important is sound quality. With Audio HDR, the microphone can better pick up the differences between soft and loud sounds, and the sound of wind is also automatically filtered.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Smart Key
And a flagship, however small it may be, also includes smooth performance. The Zenfone 9 therefore has the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 under the housing. It comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage. There is also a variant with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The battery has become further larger than that of the Zenfone 8: it is a 4,300 mAh model. Charging is still possible with a power of 30W.
ASUS brings its top device to the market with Android 12 and the ZenUI 9 software shell. It strongly resembles a pure Android experience, except for a number of extras. The fingerprint scanner also works as a Smart Key, and by making gestures you can easily open an app of your choice, open notifications or control media. Furthermore, the entire interface including the camera app is optimized for one-handed use.
accessories
Finally, ASUS likes to offer its accessories for the Zenfone 9. The Connex cases, for example, come with a kickstand and a holder for bank cards and loyalty cards. The Zenfone 9 also has a Smart Backpack Mount. A case that you can easily attach to a backpack. Your phone will then hang at a good height to make videos.
