For the time being, Audi is not following the path that Mercedes-Benz previously took with the X-class. The brand has no plans to focus on a pick-up. Earlier it seemed that Audi was investigating the possibility of this.
In early 2022, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann acknowledged that his brand was considering a pickup. Philip Gündert of Audi Brand Strategy tells AutoWeek that rumors have been circulating for some time that Audi would investigate the possible arrival of a pick-up. That turns out not to be the case.
“That rumor suddenly became persistent. We don’t know exactly how that came about. Audi has indicated that a pick-up was a ‘never say never’ case for us. We have no plans for a pick-up right now. A pick-up up from Audi is therefore not in the offing,” says Gündert. Clear language.

Audi recently pulled the curtain on the Activesphere Concept, a study model in which the rear window can slide up at the touch of a button, creating a kind of open loading platform. An Audi with an open loading platform seems to remain only a study model for the time being. Competitor Mercedes-Benz dared years ago to transform the Nissan Navara into an X-class. That X-class did not bring Mercedes-Benz a great sales success. It was only produced from late 2017 to mid 2020. An Amarok-based Audi – as in the Photoshop image above this article – is therefore not included.
