Just to give clarity: no, this is not a Rolls-Royce. Here you see the Aurus Komendant, a Russian creation that has to compete with the top Western European SUVs.
The Aurus Komendant needs some introduction. Aurus is a new Russian brand originating from NAMI, which was again responsible for President Vladimir Putin’s limousine. NAMI built the Kortezh, a well-known-looking creation that allows Putin to be driven around regally and safely. It is clear that the Russians at the Kortezh have looked closely at Rolls-Royce, among others, and they also do that at Aurus for their first SUV. It is said to be called Komendant and we see it in action for the first time in these photos.
As the Kortezh (and the civilian version Aurus Senat) is quite similar to the Rolls-Royce Phantom, the Komendant is quite shamelessly inspired by the Cullinan. Although quite a bit of camouflage still hides the details, you can broadly see what we can expect from it. A stately SUV, with a sleek and fairly classic lines. It looks like the SUV can also do well in the snow and that will undoubtedly be due to the sturdy engine in the nose. A V8 with allegedly around 600 hp serves in the Komendant. With this, the Russians hope to prevent their countrymen from purchasing a Cullinan or a Bentley Bentayga. Nice for the East, but here in the Netherlands we should not expect the Komendant.
