We are often amazed at the speed with which speed has become normal, not least thanks to Tesla. The democratization of lightning-fast 0-100 times shifts into the next gear with the MG 4 Xpower, because this car does it in just under four seconds, for just over 40 grand.
Wait a minute, less than four seconds? That’s supercar time, right?
Not so long ago, yes. The MG 4 Power comes from two electric motors, making this the only four-wheel drive version of the MG 4.
‘Open’ 18-inch wheels offer a nice view of the orange brake calipers. Looks cool, but those big brakes serve a greater purpose.
Impressive. Is it purely about speed or has anything else been done to the MG 4 Xpower?
To manage all the power, there are larger brakes and the chassis has been adjusted. The difference is immediately noticeable, because the Xpower feels just a little tighter and more direct. However, it is certainly not a real hot hatch. It is too soft for that, which makes it very suitable for daily kilometers. At the limit, it is not the rear that slides outwards, but the entire car on all four wheels in a controlled manner. The brakes apply nicely, but the ABS intervenes remarkably quickly. The 64 kWh battery is shared with the Comfort and the Luxury, although the Xpower travels considerably less at 385 kilometers.
Alcantara and red stitching distinguish the Xpower interior from that of a regular MG 4
Does that ‘3.8’ feel as fast as it sounds?
This MG is certainly fast. The power is released in a rather crude way and the fact that the front wheels also have to process 200 hp can be clearly felt in the steering wheel. It’s certainly not all refined, but the bizarre acceleration is certainly fun. The people on the street gape at us in surprise, because almost nothing shows that such a monster is here. Even a rating plate is missing!
Take a good look: on the Xpower, the spoiler edges under the bumpers are high-gloss black. The silver-colored accents are also unique to this version.
And what exactly does the MG 4 Xpower cost?
It will not surprise you that this is the most expensive version of the MG 4. At €42,285, the Xpower is another thousand euros more expensive than the Trophy, but there is nothing that comes even close to this performance for this amount.
The name ‘Xpower’ comes from this brutal super coupe of which only a few dozen were released before the British MG folded in 2005.
