Hidden behind tire storage for years
At Audi, they recently found a bare body of an Audi Sport Quattro behind a tire storage. One of the most legendary Audis ever of which only 220 were made. A Sport Quattro cost 203,850 German marks in 1985, but nowadays enthusiasts pay more than 300,000 euros for it.
During a visit by our colleagues from AutoBild to the ‘sacred halls’ of Audi in Ingolstadt, a kind of museum behind closed doors, the ‘barn find. According to Ralf Hornung of Audi Tradition, collectors or enthusiasts do not have to turn to Audi for the bare body. “That body remains where it is. We may need him again.” The basis for the Sport Quattro, which has been hidden for years, could be worth a fortune to replica builders. Because a real Sport Quattro is so exclusive, some people build one themselves. For the rear section you need the body of an Audi Coupé, for the section up to and including the B-pillar an Audi 80 B2 two-door, as Audi did in the 1980s with the shortened version of the Oerquattro. That Sport Quattro has the steeper A-pillar of the 80 and not that of the original Quattro.
Four Sport Quattros in collection
Incidentally, four real Sport Quattros are part of the collection, which also includes the most beautiful models of the Horch, DKW, NSU and Wanderer brands. They are available in all four colors in which you could get the Sport Quattro at the time: Tornado red, Alpine white, Copenhagen blue and Malachite green.
The Sport Quattro had a 306 hp 2.1 five-cylinder turbo and, with a top speed of 248 km/h and a 0-100 sprint of 4.5 seconds, was exceptionally fast for its time. It was a homologation model for the rally guns of the Group B classification.
