Beware: new form of scam via iDeal – this way you stay safe

Be careful if you regularly pay via iDeal, because there is a new form of scam going around with this payment method. This is how you stay safe!

Scam via iDeal

The transition phase from iDeal to Wero has started! For many Dutch people, iDeal is the payment system for digital transactions. This will soon change, because iDeal will make way for Wero. This will be the new European payment system, which is based on iDeal. To ensure that this transition runs smoothly, the Wero logo will appear from January 2026 on digital payments processed with iDeal.

Major changes are coming, which makes it important to be even more careful against possible scams via iDeal in the near future. Criminals are trying to take advantage of the transition to Wero and will probably become more active in the near future. For example, scammers regularly send text messages or emails about the transition from iDeal to Wero. These messages are misleading because criminals are trying to steal your data or money via links to dangerous websites. KPN now also warns about this:

Will you receive text messages or emails in the near future that are about the transition from iDeal to Wero? Then check carefully who the sender is and what information is provided in the message. It is important to know that you as a user do not have to do anything when switching from iDeal to Wero. Do you receive a message via your Mail app or WhatsApp, for example, asking you to do this? Pay close attention, because this is probably a scam via iDeal.

In most cases, criminals can only steal data and information if you click on a link to a dangerous website. If you have received a message about iDeal with a web link to an unknown page, there is a good chance that it is a scam. In that case, block the sender immediately and delete the message. The most important thing is that you never click on the link to the website to ensure that your data remains safe.

iDeal becomes Wero

In addition, never share personal information online, even if requested in a message about the transition from iDeal to Wero. Have you received a message about iDeal and are you unsure whether it is a scam? Then use the official channels to look up the contact details of the so-called sender of the message. For example, look up the number of your bank or provider via the internet, so that you can be sure that you will not come into contact with criminals.
