BMW i3 is calling it quits this year

BMW will stop production of the i3 this year. This marks the end of a very important chapter in the brand’s history. Don’t worry: the new i3 is not long in coming, although that will be a completely different story.

Perhaps it is difficult to imagine, but the BMW i3 is already blowing out nine candles this year. In July 2013, the striking electric BMW i3 was presented. The i3 caused quite a stir, we can say. Not only because of its drivetrain, but also because of its special appearance. Although there were certainly well-known BMW elements in the design, the i3 could not be compared to anything from the brand. The special futuristic interior also caused a storm of reactions.

Looking back on the years that followed, we can say that BMW has done well to bring the i3 to the market. At a time when electric driving was really still in its infancy, it already managed to attract quite a few customers. In total, the counter is now about 250,000 pieces and there will be no more large numbers, reports drive. A BMW spokesperson has informed that medium that the plug will be pulled from production in July, exactly nine years after the unveiling. With this, the i3 will not immediately disappear from the showroom, but it will no longer be possible to configure and order a new one.

Anyone who thinks that the i3 has been played out for a long time may be surprised at the Dutch sales numbers. Last year 695 i3s were sold, in 2020 no less than 1,220 and in 2019 even 2,861 units. 2019 was also the top year for the i3 in terms of Dutch sales, while the i3 was already quite old at the time. A refresher, in which the i3 got a more capable battery pack, contributed to this. In total, the counter currently stands at more than 9,100 copies sold in our country.

Something tells us that the next BMW i3 will go well beyond that. That is flatly said to be the electric version of the BMW 3-series. At the end of last year we surfaced the first photos. We expect the unveiling this year.
