BMW presents new entry-level plug-ins for 3 and 5 series

BMW is expanding the delivery range of both the 3 and 5 series with a set of plug-in hybrids. These are new engine versions that are given a place among the already known plug tastes.

The BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring were already available as 330e and 330e xDrive, plug-in hybrid versions with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood that is linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission that incorporates an electric motor. The system power of the already known 330es is 252 hp, but thanks to XtraBoost it can be temporarily increased to 292 hp. The maximum torque is 420 Nm. They come completely electrically between 55 and 68 kilometers. The battery pack has a capacity of 12 kWh. Are these values too spicy for you? Don’t worry, BMW is adding 320e’s to the range of the 3-series. The 3-series Touring also gets a 320th xDrive version. Shifting is done in all versions with the help of the well-known eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

3 series

The 320e’s powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter 163 horsepower four-cylinder, backed by a 113 horsepower electric motor. It gives the plug-ins a system power of 204 hp and 350 Nm. The 320th Sedan thus sprints to 100 km / h in 7.6 seconds and has a top speed of 225 km / h. As the 320th, the Touring needs 7.9 seconds for the 0-100 sprint and a top speed of 220 km / h. The 320th xDrive Touring needs 8.2 seconds for the same sprint and throws in the towel at 219 km / h. The top speed in electric mode is 140 km / h.

More interesting is of course the electric range. Just like the 330es, the new 320es have a 12 kWh battery pack. That gives the 320th Sedan 54 to 59 kilometers of electric range. For the Touring and xDrive Touring, those figures are 46-57 kilometers and 53-60 kilometers. The battery pack can be replenished with electricity with a charging capacity of up to 3.7 kW.

5 series

The plug-in range of the 5-series already consisted of the 292 hp 530e Sedan and Touring (with and without xDrive) as well as the 395 hp 545e xDrive Sedan. The 5-series is also introduced to an entry-level plug version called 520e. There is no xDrive version. The powertrain is similar in composition to that of the 320th. Again, a 163 hp 2.0 four-cylinder that works together with an electric motor, although the electric motor in the 5-series is 109 hp instead of 113 hp. The system power, however, is equal to that of the 320e with 204 hp and 350 Nm. The 520th Sedan reaches a speed of 100 km / h on the clock in 7.9 seconds and thunders on until a speed of 225 km / h is reached. The Touring needs 8.2 seconds for the 0-100 sprint and stops at 218 km / h. The Sedan squeezes an electric range of 53 to 60 kilometers from its 12 kWh battery pack. The Touring makes it to an electric one range from 55 to 57 kilometers.

The new plug versions of the 3 and 5 series will be on the market in March. From that moment on, BMW has fifteen plug-ins in the range. By 2023 this should be 25.
