“BMW was the largest premium brand in 2021”

Everything indicates that BMW has overtaken its rival Mercedes-Benz when it comes to sales figures. This would also allow BMW to call itself the largest premium car brand in the world.

Everything in the headline and the intro is still between proverbial quotes, because BMW has yet to officially present its figures. However, Reuters news agency reports that the brand’s sales chief has reported in interviews that it sold more than 2.2 million vehicles under its own brand in 2021, excluding Mini and Rolls-Royce.

If that is correct, the title will go to Munich, because Mercedes reports in an official report today that the total remained at 2,093,4767 passenger cars in 2021. That is 5 percent less than last year. This probably has more to do with chip shortages than a lack of demand, but numbers are numbers. If BMW is indeed the biggest, then Mercedes will have to relinquish its number one position in this part of the market for the first time in five years.

It’s not all bad news at Mercedes, by the way. Parent company Daimler reports that the brand sold almost 70 percent more PHEVs and EVs. The highly profitable products from AMG, Maybach and the G-Class range also set records, while the S-Class recorded a 40 percent increase in sales. In Europe, sales were 11.2 percent lower, but in North America Mercedes notes a minimal (0.3 percent) plus.
