Ate too hot and burned your tongue? Although the injury usually heals on its own, you can still relieve the initial pain with various home remedies.
A burnt tongue hurts and leaves you with an unpleasant feeling. Sometimes the affected area is even numb or feels furry. This worries some people – but a small burn on the tongue is usually not dangerous. In addition, the tissue heals very quickly on its own.
Burnt tongue: what happens?
When the tongue is burned, the sensitive tongue tissue is injured. This activates certain receptors on the tongue, which transmit the pain stimulus to the nervous system and thus make the pain noticeable. The taste buds can also be affected. This is why you may taste food and drinks less intensely after you burn your tongue.
If you burn your tongue, it hurts, but it’s usually nothing serious. You can effectively relieve the pain with a few home remedies.
Tongue burnt: How to relieve the pain
The following home remedies can help against the unpleasant feeling of a burnt tongue and protect against inflammation. The tips will also help if you burn the roof of your mouth.
- First: If you haven’t finished eating or drinking a hot drink, you should let it cool down a bit and stop eating or drinking hot. In the next few days it will be good for your tongue if you avoid extremely hot, spicy and acidic foods. These can further irritate the wound.
- Immediately after a burn, you can use cold water to help: move it back and forth in your mouth for a few minutes so that germs are flushed out of the wound.
- Cold yogurt or ice cubes are suitable for cooling the burnt tongue. Both relieve the pain slightly. Keep yogurt or ice cubes in your mouth for a while. Important about the ice cubes: To avoid frostbite in the mouth, you should move them back and forth well.
-
Honey and chamomile tea have an antibacterial effect and protect against inflammation.
- Antibacterial mouthwashes can also help.
Important: Small blisters or pimples often form on the tongue after a burn. Under no circumstances should you express these, as this can lead to more serious infections. After a few days, the burned tongue will usually completely regenerate. If the swelling does not go down or the pain gets worse, it is still advisable to see a doctor.
