Busiest morning rush of the year

Wednesday morning came to the busiest morning rush of 2021. At its peak, there was more than 550 km of traffic jams, partly due to road closures and very bad weather.

Rain, serious accidents and road works led to the busiest morning rush of the year on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the ANWB tells. NU.nl. Around 8.20 am there was no less than 565 kilometers of traffic jam spread over a hundred places in the country. “That is due to the combination of road closures and the bad weather. Usually more accidents happen,” said a spokesperson for the ANWB. The most problematic closure is of course that of the A12 between Utrecht and The Hague.

Wednesday morning it is especially busy in the region of Dordrecht, Rotterdam and Gorinchem. Many small traffic jams accumulate there, which were caused by accidents on the road. “It is also very busy on the A15 and A16, because the A12 in the direction of Utrecht to The Hague is closed,” the spokesperson explains. Traffic is also fixed at various points on the A2 (63 kilometers of traffic jams), A4 (36 kilometers of traffic jams) and A1 (35 kilometers of traffic jams). Furthermore, a number of roads were completely closed due to accidents, such as the A4 and A6. With 565 kilometers of traffic jams, the previous morning rush hour record of this year (468 kilometers of traffic jams) has been amply broken.

According to the ANWB, it is quite remarkable that this happens on a Wednesday morning. Tuesday and Thursday are traditionally the busiest days. However, better weather is forecast for Thursday and, moreover, the closed section of the A12 will open again at 5:00 in the morning.
