Several cases of flea infestation have recently been reported to people in Berlin. Experts suspect a connection with wild foxes that are common in the big city – even in the city center, the wild animals occur. What is known about the parasite cases and what can those affected do?

There are various flea types that are usually specialized in a certain host to feed on its blood – for example dogs, cats, rats or chickens. However, some types of these parasites can affect both wild and pets as well as humans on the appropriate opportunity. This includes the “human flea” pulex irritans, which, in addition to humans, can also affect cats, dogs and foxes. In areas where foxes are often and putting on their construction, these blood -sucking insects can therefore be transferred to humans.
