First European achievement?

BYD Atto Sweden’s 3rd most popular EV in July

The Chinese BYD has what we know of as the first European sales achievement in its pocket: the BYD Atto 3 was the most popular electric car in Sweden in July. The compact SUV takes second place among all cars.

The BYD only has to tolerate the Volvo XC60 in Sweden’s sales ranking for July 2023. Narrowly, according to figures from Bestsellingcarsblog. Last month, 807 units of the Swedish SUV left the showroom, while BYD provided 721 Atto 3s with a license plate. This means that the Chinese accounted for a market share of 4.2 percent in this month. Over the first seven months of this year, BYD has yet to acknowledge its superiority in the Tesla Model Y, which finished in 8th place with Tesla’s ever-fluctuating sales number in July. At the brand level, BYD is eight and Volkswagen, Volvo and Kia occupy spots one, two and three in July.

While car sales in Sweden as a whole are slumping somewhat, EVs are doing particularly well. Bestsellingcarsblog reports that 38.7 percent more fully electric cars have been sold so far this year. EVs thus have a market share of 37.5 percent in Sweden. Plug-in hybrids are becoming less and less popular, but they still have a significant share at the moment. In total, EVs and PHEVs account for 59.9 percent of Swedish sales, making nearly 60 percent of new cars in Sweden rechargeable.

BYD is very big worldwide in the field of ‘plug cars’, but that is mainly due to the enormous popularity of the brand in its home country China. BYD has been active in Europe for about a year now. So far, the Atto 3 is actually the only really relevant product, but we are working hard on expansion. For example, the Dolphin has now arrived, a relatively affordable electric hatchback. The Seal is also coming our way and BYD announced another electric SUV with the Seal U.
