Car insurance has become twice as expensive in seven years

Standard car insurance (WA) is now on average roughly twice as expensive as seven years ago, according to figures from Independer. Things went fast last year, with an average premium increase of almost 20 percent.

Almost everything is getting more expensive and unfortunately car insurance is no exception. From figures from Independent shows that the average premium for third-party car insurance is now twice as high as seven years ago. Much of that increase took place last year; Since June last year, the premium for third-party insurance has risen by just under 20 percent. The increases are less significant for WA+ and All Risk insurance. These became 14.1 percent and 8 percent more expensive respectively in a year. Incidentally, the premiums increased even faster from 2016 to 2017. WA+ then became 23.2 percent more expensive in a year, WA 21.4 percent and All Risk 13.3 percent.

According to Menno Dijcks, car insurance expert at Independer, the increased premiums are largely related to increased repair costs. Another factor is that there were more than 10 percent more traffic accidents last year than a year earlier. “The premium develops along with the market,” says Dijcks. Incidentally, there are considerable local differences. In the north of the Netherlands, for example, premiums rose faster on average. In Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe (including all types of car insurance), 16.2 percent, 15.9 percent and 15 percent were added respectively. On an annual basis, this amounts to up to €110 more.

Car insurance most expensive in South Holland

As can be seen above, premiums have risen the least in North Brabant. Utrecht residents also fare relatively favorably. How much the premiums have increased does not say where you are most expensive. That is not in the three northernmost provinces. In South Holland you now spend an average of €1,030 per year, in North Holland €950 and in Utrecht €915.
