ChatGPT search function
ChatGPT introduced a paid version of the service in 2023. Since then, several features have been put behind a paywall, which you can only use if you have a subscription to ChatGPT Plus. Users with a paid subscription get more accurate answers and can upload more questions or files. ChatGPT has now announced that it will finally make an exclusive Pro feature free.
In October this year, ChatGPT added a new search function to the paid version of the app. With ‘Search’ you turn ChatGPT into a search engine that shows similar results to, for example, Google. However, you do get the benefits of ChatGPT, so you don’t see any advertisements and the results are clearly arranged. You see the source for each result, so you can go to the relevant website with one click. ChatGPT has now announced that the search function is also available with the free version of the service.
‘Search’ with ChatGPT
The search function in ChatGPT is immediately available to all users, even if you do not have a paid subscription. ChatGPT has now rolled out ‘Search’ to the free version on the website, Mac (Book), iPad and iPhone. This means that you can now also use ChatGPT as a search engine, so you no longer need Google, for example. This is how you do it:
- Open ‘ChatGPT’ on your iPhone, iPad or Mac;
- Tap the globe below the search bar;
- Enter a search term of your choice and press the up arrow;
- The search results will then appear automatically.
After entering the search query, ChatGPT will display a list of all results. This list starts with a number of images, followed by brief explanations of the search terms. Do you find a search result interesting? Then you can visit the full web page by tapping on the source. This is always displayed at the end of every search result, so that you immediately know where exactly the text was found.

With the new search function, ChatGPT directly competes with search engines such as Google. For many users, this feature means good news, because Google is increasingly criticized for the search results displayed. Nowadays these are often sponsored, so you no longer get the best answer to your question in the search engine. This is now the case again with ChatGPT.
To use ‘Search’ in ChatGPT you no longer need a paid subscription, but you must be logged in. It is therefore a requirement to create an account with ChatGPT, which does not cost any money.
