Checking Your iPhone Too Often Is Bad for You (And Here’s Why)

We all spend too much time looking at our iPhones and that’s bad, really bad. A new study shows how bad it actually is.

Secretly, we all know it: if you look at your iPhone a lot or spend a lot of time behind a screen, it is not good for your health. But how bad is it really?

Checking Your iPhone Too Often Is Bad for You (And Here’s Why)

A recent study provides a clear answer to this. More than seven hours of screen time per day is bad for your health and costs (in this case the American economy) $73 billion annually. The research shows that you can suffer from tired eyes, neck pain, sleeping problems and musculoskeletal complaints, among other things.

The report was written by the American Optometric Association (AOA) in collaboration with Deloitte Access Economics. According to the researchers, you don’t have to immediately throw your iPhone in the corner, because you can do something about it quite easily.

According to Ronald Benner of AOA it is even very easy. Not looking at your (iPhone) screen for a while is the easiest solution. The easiest way to do this is with the 20-20-20 rule. If you sit in front of a screen for 20 minutes, you have to look somewhere else in the distance for 20 seconds, about 20 feet away (this is about 6 meters).

But there are more things you can pay attention to. For example, you should try to use fewer devices, because switching between screens is especially disastrous. In any case, make sure that you are sitting properly and that both your desk and chair are at the right height.

Place your screen (or hold it) in such a way that you are not bothered by reflections. In addition, always take a break if you experience pain in your neck or eyes and have your eyes checked regularly.
