Chrome OS Flex now widely available for legacy Windows PCs

Google has now rolled out its Chrome OS Flex operating system widely. It should breathe new life into old laptops or desktops running Windows or macOS. On the other hand, Chrome OS Flex has already provided a way out for PCs infected by ransomware.

Computers get much longer support compared to smartphones, even if you buy iPhones or Galaxy devices. But when support for your old Windows box ever ends, Google offers a solution in the form of Chrome OS Flex. That is a version of Chrome that you install on Windows via a USB stick.

Chrome OS Flex was introduced in February of 2022, but the software was only available in beta all that time. That is now changing and everyone can now through this website turn his old Windows or Mac into a Chromebook.

Minimum Requirements

Importantly, there are certain minimum requirements for the operating system to run smoothly, so you can’t successfully inject any 90s PC with Chrome OS Flex. Here are the specs Google shares:

  • Intel or AMD x86-64-bit processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • 16GB storage
  • Can boot from USB
  • Must have administrator rights in BIOS
  • Processors and video cards from before 2010 can perform worse

If you are still in doubt whether your PC or laptop will work smoothly with Chrome OS Flex, it may be interesting to check this list of supported devices view that Google shares online. You can also run the software from the USB stick to test it out before replacing Windows with Chrome OS Flex.

Lifesaver

Chrome OS Flex is now available to everyone, yet Google is primarily targeting businesses and schools with the software. According to The Verge Google’s operating system has already proved its worth at an American school hit by a ransomware attack. All 2,000 Windows computers were encrypted, but by installing Chrome OS Flex, the school got them working again. All employees received a USB stick with the necessary installation instructions.

The existence of Chrome OS Flex is actually a win-white situation. It ensures that old hardware does not end up on the waste mountain as quickly, but Google also hopes to permanently connect consumers, companies and schools with Chrome OS. Are you going to try the software on your old PC? Let us know in the comments.
