Citroën CX ‘pickup’ (1979) – Into the Wild

Judging by the shape of the taillights, the starting point for the CX pick-up seems to have been a regular CX. This copy dates from 1979 and is therefore still from before the facelift. Up to the B-pillar, the car has been left untouched, only after that major changes can be detected. For example, the rear doors had to clear the field and the roof was no longer considered necessary. The large boot lid was removed from its rear window, only the lower part was allowed to remain as a ‘tailgate’. It is not clear whether it can also be opened. In any case, the adjustments provide a considerable load space.

For a DIY project, the CX pickup seems to be quite well finished. The traces of the rear doors are not visible and a window has been placed behind the driver’s compartment. Above that window is a piece of roof, which rests on two pillars that become wider towards the top. The adjustments are all legal, because the CX is registered with the RDW as ‘CX GTI PICK UP’. According to the RDW, it was first put on a Dutch license plate in 1997, but the owners are only known from 2003. Incidentally, the RDW states that it produces 114 hp in terms of power. That comes closer to a CX 2400 Pallas. The CX 2400 GTI had 128 horsepower.

In any case, the CX pick-up is a unique appearance on the street. In any case, his current owner is happy with it, because he has owned it since 2010. It is not known when this CX underwent its metamorphosis into pickup. According to the RDW, it was rented out from 2007 to 2010, so it is quite possible that it already happened before that time. After all, a CX as a pick-up is even more unique to rent out than a regular one.
