Life is never boring at John Vanderaart. Enough is happening to deliver a short column every week. This time it is about chickens and Sunday rest. You can read his previous column about fiber optic here.

In the past, when we still lived in the old house with the large garden, we had chickens. The chickens were sociable, the chickens loved all the edible kitchen waste and – not unimportant – the chickens laid eggs. Nowadays we live in a homeowners’ association and the only chickens we have left are the slaughtered and picked ones from the farmer’s market…

But a blessing in disguise, because a shed has become available at the small animal association in IJmuiden. My wife has now given that shed a double layer of paint and I can (…) take care of the rest of the surroundings. For this I need aluminum tube, chicken wire, hinges, hinges and locks and mounting material. It’s easy to guess: “Internet!”

I can have the items delivered to their destination, so that also saves the hassle of having to fiddle with a rental car. Because my wife believes that the future chickens (the breed has yet to be chosen) should have a good time, we need a nice night cage. It’s easy to guess: “Internet!”

I sat down for this last Sunday morning. I soon had a few nice hits and unfortunately that was it for a while. I became a victim of Sunday rest. The website in question dedicates Sunday to the service of God and not to the nervous internet shopper. So not open 24/7 but 24/6…

At first I was irritated, in all other instances I actually became more and more enthusiastic. What now 24/7? Yes, Sunday should indeed be a day of rest. I turned off the computer and spent the rest of the day lazing around. Delicious! I should do that more often…
