Crab mode? We are not at the fish market in Scheveningen, are we? No, the mode named after the mostly side-walking crustacean in this article pertains to the reborn electric Hummer that GMC is adding to its lineup next year.
Hummer returns, but not as a gasoline gurgling tank as you might imagine. That doesn’t mean the reborn Hummer is going down the path of the more lifestyle-like Chevrolet Colorado-based H3. In fact, Hummer himself does not walk at all and probably not at all in a straight line. The reborn Hummer will be a model of GM brand GMC, a fully electrically powered colossus that looks like it can also move sideways.
GMC posts a logo on Twitter that relates to its upcoming electric Hummer. In the logo the model name of that newcomer is visible, but more interesting is the arthropod that has folded around the model name. The image is accompanied by the text ‘True revolutionaries set their own course’, which raises some question marks. It is already known that the electric Hummer will be available with three electric motors. Together with a flexible steering mechanism, they may make it possible to move the Hummer more or less sideways, like a crab, in other words, sideways. Rivian, the brand new manufacturer of electric pick-ups and SUVs, has already introduced a mode on the R1T and R1S that allows a ‘Tank-turn’, a turn in which the car turns on its axis through the wheels on the left and right sides in the opposite direction.
We can of course continue to speculate about the significance of the ten-legged animal housed in the logo displayed by GMC. We don’t know for sure what its meaning is until the fall of next year when the Hummer EV is presented. With its 1,000 hp and at least 1,100 Nm strong powertrain, it promises to be a colossus that is not inferior in raw power to its illustrious predecessors.
